WEB DESIGN

The latest permutation of graphic design can be found simply by looking at the Internet. It is known as “web design” and can be traced to 1991 when 'Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web, published a website in August' of that year. Although rudimentary by today's standards, that event served as a precursor for the explosion of the transmission of information on an unprecedented scale.

One substantially different aspect of web design is the fact that different languages have been invented to facilitate its development as a design element. HTML, or “HyperText Markup Language” is the underlying language of most websites. 'It provides a means to describe the structure of text-based information in a document — by denoting certain text as links, headings, paragraphs, lists, and so on — and to supplement that text with interactive forms, embedded images, and other objects.' Berners-Lee combined this form with what are commonly known as “links.” Those in the know may refer to links as “hypertext.” They allow computer users to surf from one web-page to another. This actually represents a significant evolution in the way in which information is organised. 'Rather than remaining static like traditional text, hypertext makes possible a dynamic organisation of information through links and connections.' This highlights the Internet's claim to represent an ever-growing mind map of human information. Companies like Google seek to organise this information using the dark arts of algorithms and data storage.
